Choate has added many courses to the 2020-21 Course Catalog, the most promising being Intro to Tik Tok (MU330HO). Tik Tok is a popular social media platform where users share short video clips. As social media becomes a more prominent part of society, Choate has decided that it is of utmost importance to educate students on social media platforms, starting with Tik Tok. Laurenn Grey, the mastermind behind this decision, has reported to Lorem Ipsum*, “Give it a couple years and all business, battle, and politics will be done over Tik Tok. Students need to learn about this app so that they can survive in the job force after graduating.”
The course will require students to create videos, study the Tik Tok algorithm, and communicate exclusively through epic dance moves. Some topics include getting on the “For You” page, flawless lip-syncing, and channeling “Vine energy”.
In order to pass the course, students will have to complete one of two projects: becoming a “popular creator” on Tik Tok, an accomplishment similar to winning a Nobel Prize, or being invited to join the Hype House, a group of the most elite TikTokers. Students also need to pass a written exam on the Tik Tok algorithm. “It’s a very demanding curriculum,” says future course teacher Charlise Demille, “but the Tik Tok world is ruthless, and students need to be prepared to make Tik Toks of the highest quality if they’re going to compete.”
Plenty of students are excited for the class. Crin G. Master ’21 told reporters, “I’ve been trying to learn how to use Tik Tok on my own for months now, but I haven’t made much progress. I’ve tried to renegade like a boss, but I ended up getting cancelled because my moves were not fire. I’m glad that Choate is offering the resources and space to learn.”
